My Concert Photography Workflow

/ ARTICLE

Concert photography is one of the most challenging and rewarding types of photography. You're working with unpredictable lighting, fast movement, and limited time to get the shot.

Gear

I shoot with a full-frame mirrorless body and fast prime lenses. The 50mm f/1.4 is my workhorse — it's fast enough for stage lighting and gives a natural perspective from the photo pit.

Shooting

Most concerts give photographers access to the first three songs. That's roughly 10-12 minutes to capture everything you need. I shoot in RAW, manual exposure, and auto-ISO with a ceiling set based on the venue.

The best concert photos capture energy, not just sharpness. Don't be afraid to slow your shutter and let the motion blur tell the story.

Editing

I import everything into Lightroom, cull aggressively (keeping maybe 20% of shots), and do basic adjustments:

  • Exposure and white balance correction
  • Noise reduction (these are high-ISO shots)
  • Crop and straighten
  • Light color grading for mood
